I just bought a new laptop and I have some

doubts about TLP and DPMS. Can someone help me out please?
They are:
1 - How to configure TLP for the best battery performance? I'm already using TLP with the default settings, but using it seems not to make any difference on the battery performance, so I'm guessing it's just configured wrong.
2 - I can't seem to make DPMS work effectively: I mean, I've put the command xset dpms 300 360 720 both on my .xinitrc and my wm config file and it seems not to work.

Well, it should enter standby mode in 5 minutes, which (I assume) would lessen the brightness of the screen maybe. Then it should display a black image in 6 minutes, and then turn off the display in 12 minutes. It doesn't
