old laptop?
Probably any linux distro
Alpine Linux, or postmarketOS
antiX
Void or it's musl variant
Any. But maybe the init system will matter. In that case I would suggest openrc as it's just awesome. Fast, easy, simple, does what an init system is supposed to do. On the other hand you have runit system which is said to be fast af. But I don't have a lot of experience with different inits so...
Yea runit and s6 both are very fast , s6 might be lil complex for those coming straight from systemd tho
Never used it idk. Anyway atm I do use systemd unfortunately cause nixos.
try linux mint if possible
Oh god no, never
Old hardware wants old OS or less modern environment You can install a WM if you like it, of course forget to use a modern fully fledged DE with that prehistoric hardware
isn't postmarket meant to run on phones?
What about MATE? It looks like it shouldn't require much resources. It's basically a WM with a bar and a settings menu.
Mate is a GNOME 2 fork, not a minimal WM
I know. What I'm saying is that it is VERY minimal for a DE and my assumption is that it shouldn't eat much resources.
Saving 100 MB of RAM won't make a big difference, IMHO
you have 8gb ram 7gb free and a program uses 7100mb and hours of disk io involves now makes difference.
Better to forget chrome, chromium, Firefox, etc
+ game engines, 3d designers, audio studios, etc but no we can't forget life, you need to create your program better and reduce costs. ram stick is cheap everywhere
