be Realtek. The kernel doesn't use them so I should manually install their drivers.
Question: How can I know which brands are installed by default on the kernel? So I can buy devices of those brands.
to see if your device is detected by the USB subsystem, use the command lsusb. it will show you the device. does not mean the device is supported by kernel
" How can I know which brands are installed by default on the kernel? So I can buy devices of those brands." if it's not some brand new company, or some completely obscure company, it's probably supported.
That's "realtek". All of network adapters I have tested since now are realtek (even those who of other brands are using a realtek chipset inside). And none of them are supported by default.
brand does not matter. the most important thing is the NIC chip model, and it will be shown by the lsusb command
I know. But the question still is: which NIC chip models to buy? Is there any wiki on the net telling which chip models are supported by default on each kernel version? So I don't need to read the source code.
