Question. Whats the rm logic used to stipulate deleting files

with no extensions without deleting everything? rm *.* is a no go cause lack of extensions, yet rm * is also a no go cause there are files and folders to be kept. Is the only option in terminal to take and segrigate everything that is a folder and extensioned file into its own directory and then remove everything remaining?
