You are trying to not use cron - even the smallest, pre-existing, implementations, in favor of doing it yourself by basically re-writing it from scratch. Unless your distro needs very, very specific parameters like "its a 4MB flash router and with the kernel and my c application ii am at 3,9MB can't afford the 100kb" then its premature optimization. Optimizing something that doesnt need it whereas you could focus on something else like making the application better or faster itself.
