main disk to reinstall the OS through a live version and I ran the shred command, but a little bit later, due to the larger size, I understood that I was wiping the disk I use for backups.
Panic.
It was strange because I was wiping /dev/sda which has always been the main disk, not the backup one. But Idk how they just swapped their names and the main disk became /dev/sdb. When I tried to boot the OS I previously installed, it said that the main disk was /dev/sda and the backup one was /dev/sdb (as they should be)... Is it possible that by using a live distro the names swap?
P.S. I always check before wiping but this time I didn't because "they have always been like that, why should they suddenly change?" And now I'm trying to recover something through TestDisk but with no result... Can someone help me?
welcome to why for persistent block devices you always use uuid's
