When I first read this patent, that's the thing that

jumped out at me too. Why didn't they target Apple or Google with this litigation? The iPhone and Google Pixel phones are clearly in violation as well. Apple and Google would absolutely have the resources to blow RPI's claim out of the water and would never agree to settle. So instead, they went after a non-profit in hopes that they would be too intimidated to take it to court and be forced to pay up.

They need to win a bunch of small cases through intimidation before going after big fish. They need to be able to say "Look at the hundreds of times this has held up before"
