So, here's the crux of your entire issue with it.

You have grown up your entire life by asking people what time it is for them, AM or PM. You don't even realize that GMT does the exact same thing that UTC does, because you've naturally had it input in your life. UTC doesn't use timezones, so what do you do? You ask the person what UTC times are day and night for them and move on with life. If a person doesn't want to tell you where they live, "limiting" the information they give you by only saying "GMT+-X" gives you a LOT more information about their location than UTC.
