want to create a basic system setup and snapshot it in order to be able to easily rollback to this state, and I need a solution that I can execute remotely on the machine (so I can't use a live CD). I thought about two different solutions:
Using LVM snapshot, which seems to be the most powerful and versatile solution. But, as the volume needs to be unmounted to perform the LVM merge operation, I can't run it while the system is running. I don't know if I can perform this from grub, thus create a special entry in the grub menu, or something similar.
Using an overlay filesystem over the "original" setup, so performing a rollback is simply: disable the overlay in fstab, reboot, format the overlay, re-enable the overlay in fstab, and reboot. Furthermore, the rollback is nearly instant compared to the LVM. However, this solution seems a bit messy.
What do you guys think?
Why?
Thought of PBX?
