Packages are compiled with a specific version of the libraries

in mind, said libraries are provided with everything, and everything is recompiled and redistributed, how is it possible to break the system?
Destructive updates, ok, linux is made that way, a file is not deleted unless the last file descriptor gets closed

If you can use the default packages given it's fine. But the minute you need a different version compiled as your project depends on X-0.1.4.8 while upstream is X-0.2.5.8 you'll have issues
