failure of some disk 1000 hours?
They literally give you the formula
i don't understand
why would I hit that average twice as fast? this is what I don't understand, sorry if I'm being dumb
It's basic probability theory. Suppose events A1 and A2 have the same probability P(A1) = P(A2) = 0.1 (in other words one in ten chance). Suppose you want to know the probability of either one happening in a system where both are used. P(A1 OR A2) = P(A1) + P(A2) = 0.1+0.1 = 0.2, meaning two out of ten chance. So the probability increased twice when you introduced a second event parallel to the first. Had you limited yourself to a system where only one attempt is made, you'd be left with the original P(A1)=0.1. Think of it this way: tossing a coin twice will double the chance to get tails at least once.
ahh got it, thanks so much
btw when you want to know the probability of all events happening at once you multiply instead of add. So for example we're figuring out the probability to get both tails on a coin with two attempts. Well, P(A1) = P(A2) = 0.5 P(A1 AND A2) = 0.5*0.5 = 0.25 Naturally, you're less likely to have the same event repeat so you get a 1 in 4 instead of 1 in 2.
second event series to the first one right
yes, that's why when we have a raid system and we want to know in what time will we lose our data, we do (100000)^2
