I look at the maintainers of the project, if I have any doubts about their ability it's a no. I also look for any major issues the distro has had in the past (e.g compromised iso images, broken repos, holding back security updates, certificates expiring on repos, etc etc) and then lastly if the distro is more than 1 derivate away from a major distro I skip it entirely
Unfortunately with FOSS the info on authors / maintainers is either scarce or there's too many people involved.
Why do i feel like you just described manjaro, it's a good distro than most of the stuff out there
