I run a live OS and sometimes out of nowhere

I get "Input/Output error" when trying to aceess any file / program from the CLI. Soon after programs in RAM crash as well. What can be the reason for that?

Programs in ram could crash because the I/O fails so they could not write logs or load whatever, but the main problem could be a broken usb

Just want to make sure I have no hope of recovering things that were in RAM before I reboot.
