loat family files by accidentally formatting them on two devices.
I need to recover files from Mint, but that are formatted. Location of those files are:
- USB pendrive
- formatted HDD on PC Mint and
- dsk.img and image.dd on both laptop and PC Mint (except the dsk.img).
I worked only bit with dsk.img and a lot with USB pendrive. It is named dev/sda and consequently dev/sda1 and dev/sda2.
I have tried a lot of things. From The Sleuth Kit, recoverjpeg, testdisk, photorec, even Recuva on Wine on Linux. Foremost helped me a lot but recovered files so that I can't open any of them. Because of the numbers I recognise them.
There are other options, too, like dcfldd.
What do you recommend? Be free to tell all? Where should I head since I am a nob total?
According to the Testdisk or Photorec - it seems that my USB pendrive (out of which I created image.dd and dsk.img) is damaged. When I go searching for a deeper search, I find more partitions on Testdisk, but they are simply... not recoverable by the Testdisk so I don't have any options to write them down.
Please, help or point me out if you can to someone or somewhere. I am messing my head for a long time regarding this and want to try all the options. The USB pendrive was named before PODACI and now all family photos are gone, so I want to try everything to bring them back.
Kind regards
Just tell them you lost the files and face the consequences, you probably just corrupted all the lost data with all the programs you tried so far, the USB is totally lost imho, and the hard disk may have a chance with a professional on that area. You could ask @RichardMuvirimi, he had a problem with a partition and lost many data but luckily he was able to recover it, so you may too, he used a program I didn't know its existence. But your case may be different so don't create fake hope, just consider it the last try and prepare yourself to tell your family.
Hey, thank to you and everyone else. I saved some backup strategies. TBH, I think no one from my family is interested in this except me. Sometimes I think I m the only person constantly interested in family things, while others drift away. I will search for Richard's posts these days. I managed to get the files, but they are not being able to be opened on Linux. I will try a bit more. Thank you kindly, and all, once again.
You formatted the partitions or overwrote files / partitions with some data?
Hi. Formatted HDD and installed Mint. Formatted USB pendrive with Mint iso. Being super busy, sorry for the late answer. So my idea is to retrieve data from HDD instead of USB pendrive - since it is unsecuccessful. Programs to use besides I mentioned? Maybe even Kali or Parrot since inbuilt functions? ✋
You seem to have posted a question involving Kali Linux or another pentesting distribution. Note that Kali Linux development team itself recommends against using Kali Linux for those new to Linux or even as a general-purpose desktop operating system for experienced users. People might still want to help you solve your problem, but you are more likely to learn things if you start with a different distribution.
