decentralization in digital space. Where are all those crazy anarchist types that want to live with no government?
Interesting point, I didn't consider this! I was under the impression that convenience would be first and foremost in such a consideration. But yeah, between mailing list or Git server, the password is the only practical variable. And even that's just a convenience matter when using a password manager. It's one more entry to maintain. Regarding the decentralization though, I don't think that neither Gitea nor GitLab are currently leveraging this enough at the moment. They could — and IMO should — implement a decentralized architecture a la Mastodon / Matrix, that makes all of the hosts in the network talk to each other. Currently, all Gitea / GitLab servers essentially exist in their own space, short of periodic syncs for mirrored repositories.
that would be awesome
Convenience would explain a lot until you realize a significant amount of people enjoy independence in daily life like cooking vs fastfood, heating your own water vs having hot water provided by government, solar power or gasoline generators vs depending on the grid.
