Once in a while, my ~/.gitconfig gets reset to only

Question

Once in a while, my ~/.gitconfig gets reset to only

contain one git alias I set up long back. I don't know how I added this alias (through the gitconfig itself or through something else) and hence no clue why it gets retained.

I lose all other global setup like username, email, keys, etc.

Anyone knows what could cause this?

what is the timestamp on last modified info for the file? And if this happens periodically, then is there any cron job or some script configured for the same?

Sorry; I've updated the file again in the meanwhile, so timestamp will be after I updated it. There are no crons. It seems to happen some times after a restart.

No, it's only happened twice so far

I had a simikar issue with an company computer, because home is on a cifs share. Whenever i have problems with the share git considers it empty and writes an empty gitconfig.
