It only backs up local data. But you can use network filesystems, e.g. sshfs or nfs or whatever is for ftp to back up a remote machine. The repository you back up to can be either local or available via ssh remotely.
Ok the problem is that I have a remote share but it's not accessible via ssh (router doesn't support it) but only ftp. Is there any chance to connect to it via ftp?
Search for a FUSE based ftp filesystem. On Debian I found curlftpfs, I'm sure there are other ones as well.
