Hey guys , this isn't exactly linux related but i

couldn't find a better place to ask this question ;
does having tousends or millions of files (or directories) effect the performance of filesystem ?
my main question is about understanding how big companies like instagram manage their huge load of media in their server's , i tried wandering around in their blogs but i couldn't find anything useful , i asked this somewhere else , and they said they(instagram) probabaly use another service to manage their media , well this still doesn't solve any problem , how does this other service manage this huge load of files ?
plz let me know if you have any information or know any article which i could read and understand this better
