another approach would be similar to what you've described: use the service discovery pattern. your hosts during boot should run some script to register themselves in consul, for example. you could then query consul using ansible dynamic inventory and run provisioning

hmmm, that's a nice one to explore the consul one. However what advantages would it present over DHCP+DDNS ?
